Background

The notion of the bicameral mind goes back to the American psychologist Julian Jaynes (1920-1997). In his book “The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind” (1976) he argued that the early human mind worked in two “chambers”: one half spoke in inner voices that were interpreted as the voices of gods, while the other obeyed. Only with the breakdown of this bicameral order, he proposed, did today’s reflective self-consciousness emerge.
