Werbefläche frei von H. Schero: figurative Komposition in Rosttönen mit gestürztem Kreuz

Mixed media on board · 220 × 150 cm

A large-format, socially critical major work in rust and brown tones: at its centre, a figure covered in ornament hangs upside down beneath the painted lettering “WERBEFLÄCHE / frei” (advertising space available), surrounded by doll-like dismembered bodies and a wheel of legs bearing the inscription “DIEN NORM” (serve the norm). An uncompromising reflection on commerce, standardisation and the body made available.

Background

Art of the 1980s engaged intensely with advertising and consumer culture. Artists adopted the visual language of commercial imagery in order to question its promises; a well-known example is Barbara Kruger’s work “Untitled (I shop therefore I am)” from 1987, which recasts Descartes’ dictum “I think, therefore I am” as a formula of consumer society. Text within the image and the aesthetics of the billboard were among the recurring devices of socially critical art in this period.
