Vier Schaufenster von H. Schero, Monotypie 1984, 300 x 175 cm: kubistisches Konsum-Panorama

Monotype · 300 × 175 cm · 1984

The principal work of the Schaufenster series: four monumental shop-window displays, fragmented in a Cubist manner into a panorama of consumption – goods, reflections and passers-by interlock into a critical stage of the world of commodities. At 300 × 175 cm, one of the largest sheets in the œuvre of H. Schero.

Background

In monotype, each painted plate yields only a single full impression; the process combines the immediacy of painting with the act of printing and makes every sheet a unique work. The technique was developed in the 17th century by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione. Its most famous historical practitioner was Edgar Degas in the late 19th century, who created more than 300 monotypes and raised the technique to an artistic medium in its own right.
