Schaufenster & Torsi – Monotype (1984)
Monotype · 140 × 100 cm · 1984
From the self-contained Schaufenster group of works of 1984: figures and display merge into a scene dismantled in a Cubist manner – the human being between commodity and mirror image. A characteristic sheet from the artist’s early phase of consumer critique.
Background
The monotype is a one-off printing process: the image, painted directly onto a smooth plate, can be pulled onto paper as a full impression only once, making every sheet unique. The technique goes back to Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione in the 17th century. In the late 19th century Edgar Degas took it up and created more than 300 monotypes, whose painterly effect blurs the boundaries between drawing, painting and printmaking.
