Mandala – Wooden Stele with Symbol Wheel
Wood sculpture, openwork carving · Height and wood type to be confirmed with the studio.
A slender wooden stele whose openwork-carved symbol wheel joins sun, circle and ornament into a standing mandala. The stele translates the artist’s mandala paintings into three-dimensional space – meditation as object.
Background
The mandala, Sanskrit for circle, serves in Hinduism and Buddhism as a ritual diagram of the cosmos and as an aid to meditation. The form was never confined to the flat surface: temple complexes such as the Buddhist Borobudur on Java are often read as walkable mandalas. The Swiss psychiatrist C. G. Jung saw in the mandala a symbol of wholeness reflecting the order of the psyche.
