Background

The reclining figure is a classic motif in art history: from the river gods of antiquity to the reclining nudes of the early modern period and the abstracted reclining figures of modernism, for example in the work of Henry Moore, it has been reinterpreted again and again. The motif often merges body and landscape, rest and weight into a single form.
