A surreal, quiet landscape: a gently curved, pastel-yellow dune before a strip of blue sea, separated by the white horizon that gives the work its title. Floating within it, drawn elements – a slender figure with a vessel-like head, a face in profile within a sail-like stretch of yellow cloth, a dark poppy-like blossom. An early major work among the poetic landscapes.

Background

Vast, silent landscapes with a clear horizon and enigmatically floating elements have been part of painting’s repertoire since Surrealism. After André Breton’s manifesto of 1924, painters such as René Magritte and Salvador Dalí made the dreamlike, otherworldly landscape a central pictorial type of modern art.
