Background

Linocut is a comparatively young relief printing technique: linoleum, patented as a floor covering by Frederick Walton in 1863, was only discovered as a printing block by artists in the early 20th century. The soft material can be cut evenly in every direction and favours clear contours and solid fields of colour. Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso brought the technique international standing. The three-part form of the triptych, in turn, derives from medieval altar art, in which a central panel is framed by two wings.
