Background

In linocut, all areas that are not meant to print are cut away from the soft linoleum plate; the raised surfaces that remain take the ink. The material originated in the 19th century as a floor covering and was discovered for printmaking in the early 20th century. Famous practitioners such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso valued the technique for its clear, planar visual language.
