Background

Heinrich Böll’s novel “Haus ohne Hüter” (published in English as “The Unguarded House”) appeared in 1954 with Kiepenheuer & Witsch. It tells of two boys in early 1950s postwar Germany whose fathers were killed in the war, and of the mothers who carry their families alone. Böll (1917-1985) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1972.
