Gitanjali – Pair of Sheets (1985)
Watercolour with pen and ink on paper · two sheets, both signed and dated · 1985
Two poetic nature sheets inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s cycle of poems “Gitanjali”: delicate watercolour grounds inscribed with pen-fine drawings of plant and landscape. Created as a pair of sheets belonging together – available together or individually.
Background
“Gitanjali” is a cycle of poems by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). The original Bengali edition appeared in 1910, followed in 1912 by “Song Offerings”, a selection translated into English by the author himself. For this English version Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, the first non-European to receive it. The poems combine religious devotion with images of nature in simple, songlike language.
