Mixed media on crumpled, dyed paper · 60 × 40 cm · from a series of eight motifs

A large-format, horizontal leaf motif in deep wine red and bordeaux, its midrib and veining brought out in lighter tones. The leaf rests on a heavily crumpled, batik-like dyed paper ground in orange, ochre and sage green – the net-like structure of creases covers the entire surface, lending the work a relief-like, aged presence. The centrepiece of the Foglia series: the leaf as a sign of becoming, passing and remaining.

Background

The leaf is one of the oldest symbols in art: in the vanitas tradition, especially in seventeenth-century still life painting, withering foliage stands for the transience of all earthly things. At the same time, the green leaf points to growth and renewal, linking it to the tree of life tradition found in many cultures. Between these two poles, passing and remaining, the leaf motif has endured into contemporary art.
