Background

Figures made of letters stand in a long tradition of joining script and image. In his Calligrammes of 1918, Guillaume Apollinaire let lines of poetry come together into recognisable shapes, and the concrete poetry of the 1950s, shaped in part by Eugen Gomringer’s constellations of 1953, made the printed word itself an artistic material. The German term Schriftbild describes this double nature: a text that is read and, at the same time, seen as form.
