Die Große Mutter von H. Schero, Serigrafie 1995: kreisendes Weltenbild in erdigen Tönen

Screen print · 40 × 40 cm · 1995

An almost square image of the world: the Great Mother as an emblem of nature both generative and imperilled, condensed in a circling composition and an earthy palette. Companion piece to the screen print “Die Fünf Jahreszeiten der Sinne” from the same year – particularly effective as a pair.

Background

Serigraphy, also known as screen printing, goes back to East Asian stencil techniques; the first modern patent for a screen printing process was granted to Samuel Simon in England in 1907. The term serigraph was coined around 1940 in the United States to distinguish artistic printmaking from industrial screen printing. The technique gained broad recognition as an art form in the 1960s, when Andy Warhol made it a signature medium of Pop Art; each colour is applied to the sheet in a separate pass through a fine mesh screen.
