On a golden ground, the senses circle through five seasons: a mandala of perception, time and abundance, with four emblems in the corners. Companion piece to “Die Große Mutter” from the same year – conceived as a pair of mandalas.

Background

In serigraphy (screen printing), ink is pressed through a fine mesh onto the paper; each colour requires its own printing pass, which accounts for the dense, luminous fields of colour typical of the technique. The modern process was patented by Samuel Simon in England in 1907 and established as a fine art printing technique in the United States in the late 1930s. Since Andy Warhol adopted screen printing for Pop Art from 1962 onwards, the serigraph has ranked among the recognised media of printmaking. The circular motif also stands in the tradition of the mandala, the Sanskrit word for circle, an image of cosmic order.
