The leitmotif of the Cross cycle: a monumental cross uniting surface, figure and space in dense earth tones. Between sign and body, an image of burden, support and transcendence emerges – one of the central large formats in the œuvre of H. Schero.

Background

The cross is one of humanity’s oldest signs and, in the art of the 20th century, developed far beyond its religious context. Kazimir Malevich presented his “Black Cross” in 1915 as a purely geometric form of Suprematism; for Antoni Tàpies the cross became a recurring sign of pain and transformation, and Joseph Beuys linked it to questions of sacrifice and renewal. In modern painting the motif thus stands between elemental form, spiritual symbol and existential sign.
