A figure assembled from letterforms carries a leaf across the open book – language becomes body, the medium becomes image. On grey-beige paper, signed and inscribed by the artist at lower right. Closely related in motif to the key work “Drucksache Mensch”: together, the two sheets form the heart of the Buch & Mensch group of works.

Background

Script as a pictorial element developed a tradition of its own in 20th-century art. In his Calligrammes, published in 1918, Guillaume Apollinaire arranged lines of verse into pictorial figures, and the concrete poetry of the 1950s, such as Eugen Gomringer’s constellations of 1953, treated the typeset word itself as visual material. In such script-pictures, text becomes legible twice over: as a verbal statement and as a constructed form.
