Background

The breaking and sharing of bread is one of the central motifs of Christian iconography: it refers to the Last Supper and the meal at Emmaus and was depicted as early as the first centuries of Christian art, for example in the so-called Fractio Panis fresco in the Catacomb of Priscilla in Rome, one of the oldest surviving works of Christian painting. Beyond its religious context, shared bread is regarded in many cultures as a sign of hospitality and community.
