A white ladder ascends and becomes the letter alpha: beginning, ascent and sign united in a single image. The “Alphaleiter” connects the artist’s script-based works with a clear, almost emblematic pictorial idea.

Background

Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and derives from the Phoenician aleph. In visual tradition, the ladder has stood for ascent and for the link between earth and heaven for centuries; the best-known example is Jacob’s ladder from the Book of Genesis. The motif thus joins a letterform and a symbol of ascent into an image of beginning.
