Twenty square sheets in narrow gold frames, hung in the form of a cross: monochrome colour fields in ochre, rust red, violet, dark brown and grey-blue alternate with delicate drawings of twigs, branches and leaves on a cream-coloured ground. The title “Albero” (Italian for tree) binds drawing from nature and pure colour into a single meditative whole – the sister group of the Foglia series, devoted to the tree.

Background

As tree of life or world tree, the tree is one of the universal symbols of cultural history: from the Norse world ash Yggdrasil to the Celtic tree of life and the Kabbalah, it stands for the connection between heaven and earth, for growth and permanence. The ordered hanging of many individual panels also has a long tradition, for example in the polyptychs of sacred art, in which separate fields combine into a single overall image.
